Cleveland, Tenn. | December 2025

Blackman Wrestling delivered a statement performance Saturday at the Cleveland Duals, battling through one of the toughest fields they will see all season and finishing as Tournament Runner-Up. The 10-team event featured strong programs from across Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama, including Cleveland (TN), Thompson (AL), Carrollton (GA), Mountain View (GA), Woodland–Cartersville (GA), Summit (TN), Ravenwood (TN), Ringgold (GA), and Soddy Daisy (TN).

The Blaze went 4–1 on the day, advancing to the championship dual and proving they can compete toe-to-toe with some of the region’s best teams.

Blackman opened the tournament with authority, defeating Mountain View (GA) 56–20 behind a wave of bonus-point victories. Pins from Andrew Workman, Landon McLean, Abraham Nadeau, Ethan Clark, and Jerison Daniel helped build an early lead and set the tone for the day. After receiving a Round 2 bye, the Blaze returned to action with a hard-fought 42–30 win over Woodland–Cartersville (GA), highlighted by key falls from Carter Hughes, Landon McLean, Abraham Nadeau, Trevor Steffy, and Mason Davison, along with a shutout decision by Germaia Ewida.

Momentum continued in Round 4 as Blackman powered past Summit High School (TN) 45–28. The dual featured dominant performances from Andrew Workman (technical fall), Landon McLean (technical fall), Eli Goodin (fall), Abraham Nadeau (major decision), Trevor Steffy (fall), Ethan Clark (major decision), Aiden Pascoe (fall), Mason Davison (fall), and Germaia Ewida (decision). In Round 5, Blackman closed pool competition in convincing fashion with a 65–10 victory over Carrollton (GA), securing a spot in the finals and guaranteeing at least a second-place finish.

Two wrestlers who consistently delivered in big moments were Trevor Steffy and Mason Davison. Steffy provided clutch wins throughout the day, including multiple falls, a huge comeback pin against Woodland, and a hard-nosed decision victory at 165 pounds against Cleveland in the championship dual. Davison was equally impressive in the lower weights, collecting key falls and bonus points that helped Blackman separate from opponents early in several duals.

In the championship match, Blackman faced host Cleveland High School (TN), one of Tennessee’s premier programs, ranked #1, and a perennial state contender. Cleveland won the dual by a 59–13 margin, but the Blaze continued to fight, picking up notable victories from Douglas Barksdale (138), Landon McLean (144), and Trevor Steffy (165). The matchup provided invaluable experience against elite competition and reinforced Blackman’s growth as the season progresses.

Thoughts from Coach Heathcott

Following the event, Head Coach Heathcott praised the team’s mindset and steady improvement:

“I am so proud of every single one of these young men. They continue to trust the process, pushing each other to the standard and progressing week to week. They are toeing the line ready to compete and building confidence with every match. A lot of big wins today on our way to the finals. We will enjoy today and then get back to work! Love my Blackman Family! We are #GettingBetterTogether!”

Assistant Coach Dane echoed the excitement and belief surrounding the program:

“The guys came and let the whole state know WHO WE ARE!!! We have an unbelievable group of kids and coaches. I have too much fun coaching this team. All I ever really want is our kids to compete, and this whole season they have done that. WE AIN’T COMING… WE ARE HERE!!”

Blackman’s runner-up finish at the Cleveland Duals sends a clear message: this group is building something special. With depth across the lineup, wrestlers stepping up in big moments, and confidence growing with every match, the Blaze are positioning themselves for a strong run this season.

The field at the Cleveland Duals was one of the most competitive Blackman will see all season, featuring established powers and battle-tested programs from three states. Host Cleveland (TN) is a perennial state title contender and widely regarded as one of the top programs in Tennessee, while Thompson (AL) and multiple Georgia teams such as Carrollton, Woodland–Cartersville, Mountain View, and Ringgold brought physical lineups and deep wrestling traditions from highly competitive state classifications. Tennessee programs Summit, Ravenwood, and Soddy Daisy are consistent postseason qualifiers that routinely produce state placers and tough dual teams. Every round demanded focus and toughness, with few easy matches and multiple lineups capable of swinging momentum quickly. Blackman’s ability to navigate this field, stack wins, and reach the championship dual underscored just how well the Blaze competed against high-level regional competition and validated their growth as the season continues.
