Blackman hosted the Independence Eagles and the Shelbyville Golden Eagles last night at The Fire Pit and earned two more dual wins moving their season record to 6-0.
First match of the evening was an 84-0 win over Shelbyville. This Shelbyville team has experienced a coaching change over the past season and their numbers are down but the guys they brought did a great job and are obviously working hard. They have some very tough kids. Shelbyville had many forfeits so the dual consisted of 5 matches. In those contests, Blackman scored all PINS!! Winners were Dylan Stebbins, Jalen Brown, Blake Barrett, Riley Hanner, and Jamil Hughes. Final Score – Blaze 84 – Shelbyville 0.
Independence is another story. Last year, early in the season, Blackman soundly defeated Independence by a score of 51-19. Later, in the first match at the TSSAA State Duals, Indy got their revenge (and all their football players) and pounded the Blaze 51-21.
Last night’s dual started off at 120 with Jeremiah Savage having a back and forth match with Schrum before securing a second period PIN! Not to be outdone, Indy came right back with a tech fall over Blackman’s Liam Elam. At 132, Austin Marlatt gave #1 ranked 132 Daniel Fowler a great match. The young Blaze wrestler showed a TON of grit and was not manhandled at all. Fowler eventually used a head throw and pinned Marlatt late in the third period. At this point, the score was 11-6 Indy. (Marlatt is going to turn some heads!)
From there, Daniel Bradford, Dylan Stebbins and Jalen Brown all pinned their opponents to give Blackman a little breathing room. At 160, Sophomore Brooks Sacharczyk faced Indy state qualifier Owen Schnedler. Schnedler was 132 last season and has moved up four weight classes to 160. Brooks started off a bit sluggish on offense but eventually opened things up and when he did, he was able to secure a single leg, throw in a half, and get the pin! At 170 Landon Fowler wasted no time and earned a 1st period pin over Jacob Oxford. Score at this point, Blaze 36 – Indy 11.
Indy wasn’t about to let things get too far out of hand. They reeled off 3 straight pins themselves over Ryan Heath, Riley Hanner and Blake Barrett. Blaze 35 – Indy 29. Just as the Blaze fans were starting to get a little nervous, Indy forfeited 285 and 106 and left only one match to go. At 113, Peyton Adams lost a tough match to Dittmer. Final Score – Blaze 48 – Indy 35. Asked what were some of the standout moments of the match, Blaze Head Coach Ronnie Bray said, “Pins from Savage (Jeremiah) and Stebbins (Dylan) were huge for us. Those guys made a big difference.”

On another note, again last night, there were a lot of good things from the JV guys. JV wrestlers won 7 out of their 9 matches. Winners were Aaron Fisher, Brendan Barber, Gabe Gomez, Jaylan Hughes, Quinn Hunter and Shawn Wolford. Great job to these guys!

Blackman heads to Cincinnati Ohio for the Oak Hills Duals tournament this weekend. Blackman will surely face some stiff competition and should come away with a load of experience and mat time.
Go Blaze!!
