Brooks Sacharczyk Celebrates His State Title Win

Even though the state tournament wrapped over a week ago, the excitement hasn’t worn off just yet.  Twelve Blackman wrestlers competed the TSSAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Williamson County Ag-Expo Center last week, and eight came away with spots on the podium including one championship title.

Blaze senior Brooks Sacharczyk won the Class AAA 182 pound wrestling title with a 5-1 decision over Hayden Maynor of Soddy-Daisy.  Sacharczyk has been a man on a mission since his runner-up finish last year and it was clear early in the season that he would not be denied again.

Brooks made his way to the finals in the 182 pound bracket with convincing wins and fierce determination.  His first two matches ended pins over Brentwood and Wilson Central.  On Friday, things got a bit tougher…but so did Brooks. His next two bouts were major decisions wins over sixth ranked Tetoe Boyd of Cleveland and fourth ranked Tyrone McDonald of Bradley Central.  In every match, Sacharczyk was dominant and clearly in control.

Saturday night, the excitement had built, and the majority of the work had been done.  One more match to go!!  In the finals, Brooks faced Hayden Maynor of Soddy Daisy.  Brooks’ only loss on the season was as a result of an injury in his first match with Maynor..  The match started and Brooks came out firing.  He scored the first takedown and kept Maynor down for the remainder of the period.  In the second period, Brooks chose down and scored a quick escape building his lead to 3-0.  In the final period, Sacharczyk kept the heat on, pushing the pace and Maynor was called for stalling.  With a little more than a minute remaining, Maynor attempted a desperation head-throw which Brooks turned into a takedown.  Maynor got an escape for his only score of the match and Brooks went on to win 5-1!!! State Champ!

The win elated the Blackman faithful and based on the sound from the crowd, many in the arena were also excited to see him win.  Sacharczyk becomes Blackman’s eighth state champion in school history after an essentially undefeated senior season.

What’s next for Brooks?  Sacharczyk is expected to compete in Freestyle and Greco-Roman styles this Spring and Summer before heading off to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.  He is projected to compete in the 184 or 197 pound weight class for the division one Trojans.

While it is always tough to see great seniors leave the Blaze wrestling program, this one will hurt.  Brooks has a particular brand of confidence and aggression while he is on the mat that is hard to replicate.  Having someone with that kind of presence in the room to motivate and mentor others is priceless.
