Blackman's Ryan Heath locks up a cradle

After much waiting and anticipation, wrestling season is here!!!

Blackman opened the regular season on the road this Tuesday night with victories over host Warren County and visitor Franklin County both at Warren County High School.

Wrestling started right on time at 6pm with Blackman squaring off first against Warren County.  The Pioneers have a few holes in their lineup and gave up several forfeits.  With that said, the wrestling started off at 132 with Blackman newcomer Joncel Riviera-Mendez losing a tough battle by pin.  Freshman phenom Brooks Sacharczyk looked solid and put Blackman on the board first with a pin over Warren County’s Jaco in his first ever high school match.  The next three matches were more pins for Blackman as Landon Fowler, Matthew Sells, and Ryan Heath all turned in first period pins.  A Blackman forfeit at 220 was followed by Jamil Hughes losing a hard-fought match to Warren County’s Flatt which closed out the dual.  Final score – Blackman 66 – Warren County 18.

Franklin County was next and Blackman rolled to a big victory over the Rebels.  Junior Daniel Bradford opened the match at 132 and made quick work of Dubose with a first period pin.  This set the tone for pins by Sacharczyk and Zack Dallas.  Freshman Gabe Gomez must have been feeling the energy as he turned in a very hard fought 10-8 decision against Franklin County’s Robert Hines.  Greg Jenkins earned a pin in his first match of the season at 160.  (Looking for good things from Jenkins)  Fowler, Heath and Sells came away with pins as well.  Blackman forfeited 220 and Hughes dropped a tough battle at heavyweight.  (Jamil is still only a couple weeks in from football so we are expecting big things from him in the coming days)  The Blaze closed out the match with pins from Wiley Van Voorst at 120 and Hunter Dallas at 126.  Final score Blackman 69 – Franklin County 9.

Anthony Gomez Wins

All in all, the Blaze looked great coming out of the gate.  Several of our guys got exhibition matches as well.  Blackman had exhibition wins by Aiden O’Hara, Carston Taylor, Jalen Brown, Jaylen Hughes, and Seth Willow!  Lots to improve on but things are looking good so far!

Blackman is back to business this weekend at the ever tough Blackhorse Invitational at Houston High School near Memphis.  Catch us on Twitter for updates from the tournament!!  https://twitter.com/BlazeWrestling
