Blackman hit the road this Saturday and headed up 840 to Wilson Central for their annual invitational. Wilson Central’s tournament always sports some tough competition, and this year several of the top wrestling teams in Tennessee were there to get their iron sharpened. Wilson Central, Beech, and Baylor School are all top 10 teams.  Getting matches against the best competition is the easiest way to get better!.

In order to get the wrestlers the maximum number of matches, the bracket format used was not a traditional tournament style bracket. The 10 man scramble bracket allows each wrestler in a 10 man bracket to get 5 matches (which is the max the TSSAA will allow in a single day). The wrestlers are divided into two pools (A and B) and each wrestler gets 4 matches within their pool. Once those matches complete, the winner of pool A wrestles the winner of pool B. The runner-up of A wrestles the runner-up of B and so on down the line.

Blackman brought 25 wrestlers to the tournament and with each guy getting 5 matches, we got some great experience. Lots of JV guys got some incredible experience against competition that they ordinarily wouldn’t see for a while. Those guys will benefit deeply from that experience. Hopefully everyone got better and learned a few things.

Wilson Central won the tournament with 5 champions (113, 138, 170, 195, 285). Baylor had 5 champs as well (126, 132, 152, 182, 220). Beech had 2 (106, 145). Blackman had one (Matthew Sells @ 160) and Bearden had one (120).
