Having lots of wrestlers on a high school wrestling team is a good thing but it has its downside. It’s difficult for the young men who are not yet able to break into the varsity lineup to sit on the sidelines and not compete on a regular basis. It’s also hard for some of them to be ok with being called “JV”.

The good news? After watching many of them compete this weekend, it clear that these guys won’t be “JV” for long! There are some studs coming up for Blackman!!!

After a super exciting and thrilling victory in Thursday night’s Region 5 Championship, Blackman spent the weekend honing and sharpening the upcoming varsity guys.

On Friday night, Coach Bray took a team to Smyrna for the Dog Pound Dual Tournament which was held at Smyrna High School. Blackman filled all 14 weight classes with JV wrestlers and went toe to toe with other teams’ varsity squads. Blackman wrestled Smyrna first and lost a close one. Next, Blackman defeated Lawrence County, lost to Hillsboro, and defeated LaVergne to end the evening 2-2. That’s pretty solid work!!!

On Saturday, many more went to the JV State Tournament which was held at Ravenwood High School. Quick fact: Blackman entered 23 wrestlers in the tournament – – more than any other team….AND nearly our whole varsity squad was there to support them and help coach. (both a sure sign of a bright future)

Blackman had a solid day and ended up with three individual Champions, and several other medalists. It’s so important for these guys to get mat time and we are proud to bring these guys into the future and help them achieve their goals!!
